extras-with-webcam-tipnest

So far you have just used of webcam as a device that can be used in video chats/webcam chats. But there are a lot more you can do with your webcam. Here we list few of the extra things that you can do using webcam.

Bar Code Reader

Ever hear of a webcam being used as a bar code reader? NO? Then here you are. Your webcam can be used as a bar codes reader and QR code reader using a smartphone and a free app. But you can do the same thing on a PC with a webcam. Download and install bcWebCam and it will automatically connect to your webcam to show the feed. Now just place the barcode or QR code in front of the webcam, the software will take a few seconds to recognize the embedded content and show you the text/link it contains.

Login Via Face Recognition

A very useful trick using a webcam can be login via face recognition. This might be a pre-installed feature in windows or you can install a simple tool called LuxandIts a totally free software you can install. In the initial configuration register your face with the software and set an auto-lock for Windows.

Security System

Use softwares like YawCam(Windows only) or Vitamin D(Windows and MAC) to use your webcam as a live video stream so you can watch it remotely.
Moreover, this software can also be configured to alert you or start recording when motion is detected in the frame of view — this is great because you obviously cannot monitor the feed from the camera all the time. For general surveillance, you can setup the software to take snapshots at mentioned time intervals and upload them to a remote FTP server.

 Funny Photo Effects

If you go to www.cameroid.com, you can use any webcam to take funny photos — either with various filters, distortion effects, scenes or frames. You don’t need to install anything or even sign up — just give the site permission to access your webcam through Adobe Flash when prompted. Once you take a photo, you can either save it to the Cameroid public gallery or download the JPG file to your computer. Even if you have not taken online college classes in photography you can still enjoy playing around with these fun effects.
You can also try out similar effects at www.seenly.com. You can also get software to create real time effects while you video chat with someone using Skype or Google Talk.

eSata vs Usb 3.0 | The Speed Factor

eSata made it’s debut as an extension for one most the most popular data transfer technology, SATA. On the other hand, USB 3.0 is on it’s way to the top. So you might be wondering which one to choose for your device eSata vs Usb 3.0 | Speed and Performance Usb 3.0 was much of an overhaul of USB 2.0 in terms of speed and performance. It now supports speeds upto  5 GB/sec  almost 11 times that of old school USB 2.0 which hardly reached 500 MB/sec. While on the other hand, eSata finishes the marathon first with bandwidth clocked nearly 6 GB/ sec. But in practical, there won’t much speed variation. eSata handles data writing a little faster than USB but loses to it at reading data. One point that should be noted before deciding on choosing between eSata and USB 3.0 is backward compatibility. USB 3.0 port does support older devices compatible with USB 2.0. Here’s a video which brings out comparison between eSata and USB 3.0 in...
